You can also leverage AWS services for advanced technologies, such as analytics, database, mobile services, and serverless, to drive innovation. The AWS Region in Sweden that I promised you last year is now open and you can start using it today! The official name is Europe (Stockholm) and the API name is eu-north-1. This is our fifth region in Europe, joining the existing regions in Europe (Ireland), Europe (London), Europe (Frankfurt), and Europe (Paris). Together, these regions provide you with a total of 15 Availability Zones and allow you to architect applications that are resilient and fault tolerant.

It will not only provide lower latency to Nordic based companies, but also drive costs further down! In fact, the prices in Stockholm are lower than anywhere else in Europe. In terms of redundancy, the Stockholm region also provides three availability centers – data centers in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm and Västerås. The new AWS EU (Stockholm) Region will be operational in 2018. When you activate STS endpoints for a Region, AWS STS can issue temporary credentials to users and roles in your account that make an AWS STS request. Those credentials can then be used in any Region that is enabled by default or is manually enabled. Stockholm Region EU Office has five full-time employees, who monitor the legislative and regulatory activities in the European Union and enable and state our joint positions and recommendations towards EU policy makers. Choosing an AWS region is not a trivial decision.

As AWS evangelist Jeff Barr noted in a separate blog post, Sweden was named the "EU Innovation Leader" in 2016 by the European Commission. The Stockholm Region joins Frankfurt, Ireland, London and Paris as the fifth AWS Region in Europe, and the 20th AWS Region worldwide.
